Shortly following World War 2, the United States started allowing US citizens to homestead parts of land on the Kenai Peninsula, giving veterans a 90 day preference over non-veterans. After the construction of the Sterling Highway that same year, more homesteads were claimed and a link to the city had a link to the outside world. In 1949, the Soldotna post office opened, followed by several other businesses. More than a decade later, oil was discovered in the Swanson river area, spurring economic growth in the region. Soldotna was officially incorporated as a city in 1960, when it had a population of just 332.

Today, Soldotna has a population of 4,163 residents and a total land area of 6.9 square miles and is located in the Kenai Peninsula Borough of Alaska. According to the 2000 census, Soldotna is made up of 88% White, 4.97% Native American, 1.73 Asian, .29% African American, .37 Pacific Islander, and 3.22% Hispanic. Other races make up approximately 4.58% of the population. The per capita income in the city was $21,740 and the average household earns $48,420. About 7% of the population lives at or below the poverty line, including 2.6% of those over the age of 65.

Another common sport in Soldotna is Hockey and, in fact, the city is home to the Kenai River Brown Bears, a junior hockey team.
