Ketchikan is the fifth most populous city in Alaska with a 2010 census-reported population of 14,070 residents and a total land area of 4.1 square miles. Known as the “Salmon Capitol of the World”, Ketchikan’s economy is closely tied to tourism and fishing and the largest part of Ketchikan’s economy surrounds the Ketchikan Pulp Company in nearby Ward Cove. The city is named after Ketchikan Creek, which flows through town. The name may mean “Thundering Wings of an Eagle” but linguists disagree on its exact meaning. Owing to its roots as a Tlingit settlement, the city has one of the largest collections of totem poles in the world.

Ketchikan is home to a number of colleges and universities, including a campus of the University of Alaska Southeast. It is also home to two public high schools and a public middle school. Elementary students attend schools in nearby towns.
