Wasilla, Washington is located in Matanuska-Susitna Borough. The population of Wasilla was 7,899 people according to the census that was conducted during the year of 2011. This represents a 44.40% increase in the population of Wasilla since the year 2000.In the Indian dialect of Denaina Athabascan, Wasilla translates into breath of air. It is generally accepted that a local respected Denaina Athabascan Indian Chief named Chief Wasilla is the namesake of the community of Wasilla.
Since the 1880's, the community of Knik had served as the supply and transport center for the area prior to the establishment of Anchorage. However, the end was close for Kink. In 1915, the construction of the Alaska Railroad and the concurrent establishment of Anchorage meant the end for Knik.
Following a land auction by the government at the location where the Alaska Railroad crossed the primary supply route the new community of Wasilla was born and overshadowed Kink in 1917. Wasilla's location has also provided a better staging point for supplies for the mines of the region of Talkeetna, as well as the Kantishna Gold Mining region close to Mount McKinley.
Since 1907, in the Willow Creek Mining District, hard rock and hydraulic or placer mining had been taking place. Between the years of 1909 and 1950, there was very active mining for gold in this region except for the latter part of World War II. During a time when gold was valued at between $20 and $25 for every ounce, it is estimated that almost $18 million from a minimum of 623,874 ounces of gold were mined. A minimum of 50 prospects and mines have been operating in this region over the years and currently some of them are still active.
In order to develop an agricultural economy in Alaska, the Matanuska Colony was set up by the Alaska Rural Rehabilitation Corporation which was formed by the federal government during the Great Depression of the 1930's. Eventually, from 1935 until the 1960's the community of Palmer became the main service and supply center for this area as a result of the some 200 farming families and supporting services that relocated to this region.
Until more direct travel was permitted between Anchorage and Wasilla by the new Glen Highway which bypassed palmer, the community remained the regional commercial center. The opportunity for suburban development occurred in the early 1970's with the subsequent finished construction of the new George Parks Highway. This resulted in ever improving business opportunities and roads Wasilla became a weekend destination for people who lived in Anchorage as well as a hometown for residents who worked in Wasilla and Anchorage.
The year 1973 saw the incorporation of Wasilla. Between the 1970's and the 1980's, the primary expansion in Wasilla resulted from the development of the pipeline and the oil boom in Alaska. For a time Wasilla was the fastest growing community of its size in the US. The community also became the commercial center for the Matanuska-Susitna Borough. The community has 1,726 businesses by late in 2009.
